News: FDA Sets 2018 Deadline to Rid Foods of Trans Fats

I am quite glad to hear the news that FDA wants all the companies to remove trans-fats from the food by 2018.  It took them so many years to admit that trans-fats were bad and I am glad that they are moving towards removing it from our foods.

Can you imagine that they were telling us to do the opposite and consume trans-fats several decades ago. That’s how margarine and other low fat spreads emerged.

Indians would definitely remember Dalda.

I find it interesting how food trends change just like fashion. Earlier fat was the enemy, now sugar is the root of all evil. I wonder where all these health bloggers/food coaches were when we were fighting fats in food? I don’t trust any food trends anymore because we do not know when they may be proved completely wrong.

News: Nobel laureates and sexism

This month seems to be bringing sexist scientists into the limelight. Last week was a scientist advising PhD students to put up with her prof staring at her breasts and now we have a scientist telling that men and women should not work in the same lab!

“Let me tell you about my trouble with girls … three things happen when they are in the lab … You fall in love with them, they fall in love with you and when you criticise them, they cry.”

How about what 3 other things that can happen when they are in the lab? “They graduate with a PhD…. They hate you and are glad to leave your lab….They become scientists and do not take shit anymore.”

Luckily the outrage has forced him to apologize and resign

News: Scientist advises student to put up with leering

I read this article and I could not believe somebody gave that advice on ‘Science’ or maybe I can. Scientists are equally sexist and participate in patriarchy as much as we like to believe they do not. Science later removed the article.

Excerpts from the article –

“Dear Alice,

Q: I’ve just joined a new lab for my second postdoc. It’s a good lab. I’m happy with my project. I think it could really lead to some good results. My adviser is a good scientist, and he seems like a nice guy. Here’s the problem: Whenever we meet in his office, I catch him trying to look down my shirt. Not that this matters, but he’s married. “

“Dear Bothered,

A: Your adviser may not even be aware of what he is doing.

As long as your adviser does not move on to other advances, I suggest you put up with it, with good humor if you can.

Alice Huang; PhD

Science removed this article but Bloomberg still has it. Read more at link.

News – Snake eats crocodile

Who knew that snakes could eat crocodiles?! I assumed that a crocodile  is too big with too many scales to be eaten whole by snakes. I knew, that snakes had flexible jaws but a croc was not what I expected.  Wouldn’t  it cause tears in their digestive system with all the scales and claws? Apparently not. A snake ate a crocodile in Australia.

Apparently, the snake does not need to eat for another 2 months after this meal. Wow!

I got it!

So, yesterday I took leave from office. I went to the university to collect my degree scroll.  I went to the office. Clearly you are not allowed inside and you have to call them on the phone from outside and state your purpose.

“So, how do you feel?”

“Erm, nothing.”

“I am interviewing you for a documentary. You gotta give a proper answer. So, how do you feel that all this is over and you never have to come back?”

“I feel calm. A sigh of relief. Like I peed after holding it in for a pretty long time.”

“Whoever answers like that!”

“Ha ha”

The lady came out, asked me my ID and took out my degree cert from the drawers. She gave me my certificate and asked me to sign and that was it.

I do not like rituals or ceremonies (unless I made them for myself) where you have to dress up which was why I will be skipping the graduation ceremony which is going to held in sometime. Also, it is not like I have many classmates I would be seeing graduate with me and the ceremony is an opportunity to meet them.

Finally, I got my degree.

It sure was one hell of a journey but I grew so much through this degree.

Thor

Pretty neat – Thorium. Actually the Marvel comics are very sciency and full of scientists and experiments gone wrong you know? Hulk, Iron Man, Giant man, wasp….

Aliens or Squids

Sorry for being away for so long, did not feel like writing though I have so many posts in my head.

Anyway, here is Promachoteuthis sulcus. It has human looking teeth. It is a species of  squid and only one specimen has been found to date. It was captured in the Southern Atlantic Ocean at a depth of 2,000m in 2007.

Reminded me of the movie Aliens straight away.
