A conversation that took place in June and was lying forgotten in my drafts section.
“That place is a shit hole (an area with a lot of pubs and bars). Women are treated like shit there! The men there treat them utterly without respect, in a disgusting manner and like lowly creatures.”
Me – Erm, How would you say that? (I have never heard of a woman being beaten up or assaulted there. It always seemed safe to me enough to walk alone even at night).
“Look at the women there. They are so drunk and cannot even realise what guy is doing with them.”
Well they do know. Maybe they want it. You can always walk out if you do not like it how a guytreats you, you know? So a woman who gets drunk and hangs out with men out of free will is allowing herself to be treated like shit because it is “western culture”. A woman who wears western clothes is being treated like shit.
A woman who is emotionally blackmailed into marrying a stranger is being treated with respect.
A woman who is molested by her in laws is not being treated like shit.
A woman whose husband beats her is not being treated like shit.
A woman who walks on the Indian street and is sexually harassed is being treated with respect.
A woman who is forced into sex with a
stranger husband is being treated with respect.
A woman who after marriage switches to traditional clothes, gives up her job, cuts off all her friendships, works like a live in maid to her husband and in laws because her husband, in laws and society expects her to is being treated with more respect because she is following tradition.
This was coming from a young highly educated Indian female living abroad. This is the kind of skewed logic that is ingrained in our society. Our culture worships women. So even if we were to force them into doing something against their will, it is for their own good as long as we follow traditions. If the woman does something of her own free will which is against our so called traditional values, she is disrespectful and deserves to be treated like shit.
